The Angel of Vengeance - Wade H. Garrett

I mean, okay. You like torture? Boom, this authors got you. You like decent story telling? Boom he's got you again. Though I say decent, not perfect. The story is good, it's interesting, has some good twists and turns to make you squirm and go "awwww heck". But it's not perfect. I actually went and read the authors website before diving into his book, and he has stated " I know my limitations and will never be a Stephen King or Jack Ketchum. Those guys are extremely crafted." It's nice to see a humble author. But you know what Mr. Garrett? You really can reach their level. The authors use of language and description drew me in, his story telling has some work to be done, but he has so much potential in what he could be.

Now. I said torture. That's literally all this book is. Some people think authors put in gratuitous torture as a sort of "cop-out" to spook its readers. And MAYBE that's what this guy was trying to do? But honestly, it didn't say that to me. He just genuinely seems to enjoy writing body horror. And there's nothing WRONG with that, as long as you have the plot to back it up. Yeah the ending is just a tad corny, but you know what? It was satisfying. I'll take corny as long as it satisfies me any day. I went into this book going "it's going to get a star, at most" because I thought it would just be another torture porn. But the raw emotion of the main character and the interesting turns the story took bumped me up, and continued to do so until the end. I don't like books without substance. And does this book have substance? Well mostly. It was a good afternoon read to really gross me out and get my brain moving. The motives for the violence are there (and all heavily explained), so it isn't just "ooo look at me I can hack an arm off".

Though the story can drag a bit, and the violent scenes can be a paragraph too long, this book did what it was supposed to do. It entertained. And it didn't feel like the author was just trying to (excuse me) "get his sick rocks off by creating snuff porn". It actually made me laugh at some points, with incredibly witty writing, and that saved any sort of downfall this book had for me.

This one earns four out of five stars from me.
